About

Who We Are

Founded in 2012 as the first land bank in Illinois, our organization represents partner cities and villages across the Chicago Southland who work together to reclaim vacant and abandoned properties. Since our inception, the Land Bank has revitalized almost 200 distressed properties, transforming vacant buildings into active ones and returning them to the tax rolls.

We boost economic vitality in Chicago’s South Suburbs by acquiring and redeveloping under-utilized properties in collaboration with local governments.

How the Land Bank works

Step 1: Acquire

Acquire title to problem or distressed properties

Step 2: Absolve

Eliminate back taxes, liabilities, claims, liens and board up, secure, and maintain the property

Step 3: Activate

Develop, sell, or demolish to support local priorities and economic potential

In partnership with the Southland Development Authority

Since this partnership was formalized in December of 2021, the Land Bank has thrived. Each year, the Land Bank redevelops more properties, brings in more revenue, and operates in more communities.
